It works. I tried this a number of years ago and it worked. Birds didn't seem to mind that their feeder had a straw hat on it. I left it there for a while and it got soaked several times when it rained. But, eventually it came down and the feeder was recycled. I have similar feeders now but they are about twice as large. They work really well because a number of birds can land on the platform at one time without bothering or crowding each other.
