The Dancing Cowbird

cowbird_female_hardlight_0822
A bison bird is now called a cow bird or cowbird

Matilda was a female. She was a cowbird. She loved to dance but I got a lot of flack from a lot of people because I was feeding birds. Can you believe it? I had thought feeding birds was a American Pastime but found out I was wrong. The biggest criticism was that my feeding them resulted in them depending on me for their food and them forgetting their instincts and ability to forage for themselves on their natural foods. I have found, over the years, that the same birds come and go. Some come and stay all summer and go in the fall. Others come back, stop off to eat a few days and then move on. I won't see them again until the following year. The same birds come back until they are either killed or die somewhere of a natural death. Matilda, was a female cowbird, who came every spring and for several days, danced for us on the window still. Matilda had a stiff leg when she danced and we could tell she was the same bird each year. And then after 3 or 4 years she stopped coming.
