Coopers Hawk eating House Sparrow

Coopers Hawk eating House Sparrow, originally uploaded by oldmanlincoln 2010.

This is the outcome when a Coopers Hawk wants a "burger to go." They choose the easiest birds to catch and then squeeze it to death. By that I mean they almost always swoop-in over the roof or around a tree and scare birds into a panic flight and the hawk doesn't care if it is a mourning dove or a house sparrow or a goldfinch. Food is a living bird and a sometimes chipmunk or young rabbit eating clover. Once caught, the hawks have the patience of Job, and squeeze the bird to death before plucking the breast feathers and finally tearing off chunks of flesh to eat. They clean up their plate and leave only feet with the toenails and sometimes the ends of the wings. If they leave these, and most do, then momma raccoon has her supper.
