| The goose on the left was the sole survivor of the original 4. |
I wrote a story for the newspaper about four beautiful geese that were dumped off at the waters edge during the height of the drought and blistering heat wave in 1998.
I spoke with the lady who dumped them at the park and she said they bought them at Easter for their children. The goslings had bonded with her family and the 4 geese thought they were people too. They grew too large and the family were no longer able or willing to care for them. I told her the geese would have some real problems if she left them at the park because they were not geese but people.
What a struggle ? some people are stupid. She left them anyway. And after being fed by hand and nursing one back to health (it was unable to swallow), the four geese were finally adjusting to the ways of wild geese. But each car that stopped at the park caused the four geese to run up to the car to see if it contained their family. Because they ran after visitors to the park, park officials rounded three of them up and took them away to a farm. The lone survivor had serious problems readjusting to mere ducks for companionship and always sought the rest of the family. One day it was just gone?
